Top 5 Best Selling Plastics Colors

Top 5 Best Selling Plastics Colors

February 20, 2020

As a tackle dealer you may have noticed there are about a million soft plastic color options on the market to choose from. There is no way you could possibly carry them all. How do you decide what to start with?

This article will focus on worms and creature baits. I think we can all agree that baitfish imitating soft plastics need to match, as much as possible, the predominate baitfish in your area. I asked several of our Missile Baits dealers what their top five selling soft plastic colors are. Their answers may surprise you. Here’s what they had to say.

Chris Kingree of 44 Tackle in Inverness, FL explained it like this, “There’s no simple answer here. Our worm and flipping bait colors are a bit different in Florida. Your flipping baits tend to be a little darker in color whereas the worm colors can be more natural at times. It all depends on the dominant forage for that time of year and water clarity. There’s some crossover but I have to list them in two categories.”

Flipping

  • Super Bug
  • Bruiser Flash
  • Junebug
  • Green Pumpkin
  • California Love

Worms

  • Blue Fleck
  • Green Pumpkin
  • Junebug
  • Watermelon Red
  • Red Bug

Ann Wilson, of Ann’s Tackle Shop in Jasper, TX, is a tackle industry and tournament veteran. She had this to say, “In Texas, you have to match the crawfish. That’s why we sell more red colors than most other places in the country.”

  • Watermelon Red
  • Red Bug
  • Junebug
  • Blue Fleck
  • Red Bloodline

Ryan Greer of Open Season Sports & Marine in Camden, TN knows a thing or two about colors for west Tennessee and Kentucky Lake. He offered, “The colors around here are pretty simple but they consistently catch fish. The only real variable is the time of year which generally dictates the water clarity. The cleaner the water, the more natural colors tend to work. The dirtier the water, darker colors work better. There are exceptions though. You can’t go wrong with Plum most of the time.”

  • Plum
  • Green Pumpkin
  • Watermelon Red
  • Blue Fleck
  • Junebug

Paul Ponder of Guntersville Tackle & Outdoors in Guntersville, AL had this to say, “The Candy Grass really represents our bluegill well and Green Pumpkin will work anywhere. Most of our crawfish are red in the spring so that’s when red really shines. The rest of the year, the crawfish are more camouflage, so your greens, browns, and darker colors work best.”

  • Green Pumpkin
  • Candy Grass
  • Green Pumpkin Flash
  • Super Bug
  • Bruiser Flash

Carter Kaiser of ROX Outfitters in Highland, AR said, “Our part of the state is more finesse driven. Our water is clearer and there’s a good amount of fishing pressure, so the colors tend to be more natural. Our water does get some color at times, so we do sell some darker colors as well. The exception here are drop shot plastics. They tend to be wilder, like MM3 or Pinkalicious.”

  • Green Pumpkin
  • Junebug
  • Watermelon Candy
  • Super Bug
  • Bruiser

You will notice there is a handful of the same colors named, regardless of the state. Green Pumpkin, Black/Blue, Watermelon, or a variation of these colors are on everyone’s list. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different flake or laminates in these core colors. You may just find your next big selling local favorite. Here’s my top five Missile colors, always in my Skeeter, regardless of where I’m fishing.

  • Green Pumpkin
  • Ballistic Bruiser
  • Super Bug
  • California Love
  • (Or a variation of these 😉)
